This is a video I found last week. I think it can relate to what we've been learning over the weeks.
I know it isn't stated in the video. But while I was watching this, I remembered the industrial revolution. This was a time when manufacturing and technology was advancing forward.
I thought about if there could come a crisis along with the use of the internet?
All over the world (in my opinion) the biggest advance in mankind's achievement was the advance in communication. It's become become extremely influential in almost everything we do. The market has even moved on to the internet. It's even gone to a point where it could be a source of easy money.
Let me put it this way, when a web developer creates an application for a phone or the internet he could could sell it over the internet. When people buy that application using their credit cards (this includes foreign countries too) that money would be sent to the country of the web developer. This makes the internet a source of income for an economy right? Please note that successful applications could earn $200,000 in a few months. If people did this on a large scale just like the industrial revolution would there come a crisis?
Could there be a consequence to connecting the world. There are some terrorism threats that could arise from the net. Could there be more.
Wow. This video made a bold move predicting the possible outcome of the internet generation. If a crisis were to affect the internet, it might have adverse effects worldwide. Different sectors would be heavily damaged, especially those who rely greatly on it. In today's society when everyone feels a need to be connected, and especially if it were to happen that virtual reality becomes the new reality, a big crisis would shake the world.
ReplyDeleteThis video's pretty cool. Virtual world? How awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think that even currently, it is possible for the world to go into a crisis. I'm not exactly sure if it'll get as big as to cause those who are "less privileged" to go and try to revolutionize and take over. I mean, currently what are all the advances in technology? Are they really necessary for life to continue? Does one need an iPod to survive? Does one need a computer to survive? No. While life may be more enjoyable with these items, life without such items would not cause people to die. The crisis from the industrial revolution caused people to work for less pay to the point where some may not have been able to afford food which is necessary for survival. I don't think advances in technology will cause this kind of crisis.
I think it will cause different crises though. I remember watching one video in a political science class I took that was about how the advances in technology would eventually lead to the deterioration of a person's personal privacy. The government would be able to see where you are, what you're doing, what you bought, where you bought it, when you bought it, etc. I remember there was a segment about how a phone company would be able to locate a person at any time of the day. There was another segment about a grocery store that used a special kind of card to purchase things and it also worked as an ID. Then there was also the idea of inserting microchips into people that will be able to keep track of their medical records and what not for whenever they go into the hospital. While these sound more beneficial than harmful, if done wrong they could possibly create their own type of crises for people, especially the lack of personal privacy.
Not to mention the fact that there are hackers out there. Hacking into government information may somehow get more easier over the years and who knows what a person would do with that kind of information. Reminds me of this cartoon I watched where some monster virus hacked into the government and launched two missiles without the government finding out til after the act. Who's to say that people would not be capable of such actions?
The movie is so relevant. It is really true that technology and the internet are so widespread nowadays. It would be so cool if virtual reality would become the new reality. Everyone seems to be connected and up to date. So it is not impossible for our world to become virtual.
ReplyDeleteBut of course, too much of anything can be dangerous. If the internet would be the main source of energy, business and everything else this may not be so good for the economy and our society. If businesses and markets depend highly on the internet, there may come a time that everything will crash. This will cause damage to almost everything since all businesses, markets and the whole society are interconnected. If the internet and technology would crash, there would be a lot of damage and the economy would decline. It is still better to have a back-up and rely on nature. We should not fully rely on technology and the internet.
What a provision. But if this happens, information dissemination will be much easier. All you will need will be on internet, which is free as what was said,in short it makes life easier but more vulnerable to abusiveness. Internet will be the main target for exploitation. Monopolization of the owners will also be a problem. Being so powerful, they can control prices without being prevented by the government. What really amaza me is the fact that even experience can also be marketed. How cool was that...
